GOV4PeaCE in Podkarpacie – in the heart of the Przemyśl Fortress!

Following the meetings in Gorlice, participants of the GOV4PeaCE project study visit on February 26-27 traveled to the Subcarpathian region to continue their joint exploration of the legacy of World War I in Przemyśl – one of the key points on the map of the Great War in the Carpathians.

The first item on the agenda was a tour of the Przemyśl Fortress Command Center – a place that presents the history of one of Europe's largest fortresses and the realities of its operation in 1914-1915 in a modern and accessible way. This is a perfect place to begin your journey in the footsteps of this unique heritage.

We then visited selected forts in the outer ring around Przemyśl, including:

Fort Duńkowiczki, where a new museum recently opened. This is an excellent example of how to combine historic preservation with modern historical interpretation and the development of an attractive tourist offer. During the visit, we also presented further elements of the Carpathia brand's cross-border product concept, demonstrating how the Przemyśl Fortress fits into the broader Polish-Slovak narrative of the Great War trails.

Discussions with partners did not end with the tour.

Specific questions and ideas arose regarding:

  • further product development,
  • joint international promotion,
  • incorporating additional sites into the network,
  • new cross-border projects and initiatives.

It was in Przemyśl that it became clear that we were at the beginning of the next stage – moving from a pilot project to real, long-term cooperation around the heritage of World War I in the Carpathians.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Association of Fortress Municipalities of the Przemyśl Fortress for their hospitality, professional tours, and openness to further development of a shared heritage product.

History unites, the Euroregion unites.
